Dayahang Rai, the renowned actor, director, playwright, and comedian, was born on August 6, 1981, in the Khawa VDC of Bhojpur, Nepal. From a young age, Dayahang lived in the village, engaging in farming and livestock. Despite societal beliefs that physical appearance is essential for becoming a hero in Nepali cinema, Dayahang, with small eyes and a fat body, defied these norms and entered the Nepalese cine world.
Dayahang faced numerous struggles on his journey to
becoming the most famous hero in Nepal. However, he possessed inner qualities
that overshadowed his physical attributes. Height, body, and a beautiful face
are considered minimum requirements for a hero, but Dayahang proved that
neglecting these beliefs can lead to success.
His amazing personality and talent have earned him
adoration from women and made him a true star in his home country. He has
achieved three national awards, a feat not easily accomplished by every actor.
In fact, he is more famous than the president and prime minister of Nepal, and
his public appearances are eagerly awaited by residents.
For aspiring actors, Dayahang's story serves as inspiration. It's crucial to let go of any complexes regarding appearance, connections, finances, or acting education. Cultivating and developing the necessary skills for acting as early as possible is key to success in the industry. Dayahang Rai's bright and intuitive nature has propelled him to great heights, showcasing that determination and talent can overcome any obstacles.
Life
History
Completing his education in Bhojpur, Dayahang finished
his lower secondary education at Pashupati Lower Secondary School and high
school at Annapurna Secondary School. He pursued a Geography Major at Bhojpur
Multiple College before moving to Kathmandu to study journalism at The Ratna
Rajya Campus.
Dayahang's passion for performing began at a young age,
and he joined Actors' Studio in 2007. He made his screen debut in the play
"Talakjung vs Tulke" and appeared in the series "Dalan" in
2003, which was broadcasted on Nepal Television in 2009.
His breakthrough in cinema came with the film "Anagarik" in 2006, which won two awards at the Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival. He won his first National Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film "Dasdhunga." Dayahang gained widespread acclaim for his role in "Loot" (2012) and received the Popular Award for it. He appeared in critically acclaimed films like "White Sun" (2016) and "Purano Dunga" (2016).
In 2006, Dayahang married Nepali singer Benuka Rai, and
they have 2 son named Samduhang Rai and newly born baby boy.
Dayahang Rai's interest in an acting career developed
during his school days, leading him to pursue further studies in Kathmandu
after completing his intermediate education in Bhojpur. Upon arriving in
Kathmandu, he stayed with a relative and eagerly attended theatre festivals,
hoping to connect with directors.
To enhance his acting skills, Dayahang attended an acting workshop organized by Anup Baral at Nachghar in Jamal, Kathmandu. He then began his journey in theatre, performing in around 20-25 stage dramas. Surprisingly, he found himself more drawn to backstage work than acting.
Following his successful performance in a drama, Dayahang secured a role in the telefilm "Yuwa." Around the same time, he received an offer to star in the movie "Anagarik" written by Shrawan Mukarung and directed by Rambabu Gurung. Recognizing the need to improve his acting skills, he decided to join an acting class.
The movie "Dashdhunga" in 2010 propelled
Dayahang Rai to fame in the Nepalese film industry. Another significant
milestone was his role in the blockbuster movie "Loot," which not
only achieved tremendous success at the box office but also brought about
significant changes in the traditional Nepali film industry. Dayahang
frequently appeared alongside Priyanka Karki in various movies.
Dayahang's remarkable performances in critically
acclaimed films such as "White Sun" (Seto Surya), based on Nepal's
civil war, solidified his position as one of the most preferred actors in
Nepal. "White Sun" was Nepal's submission for the Best Foreign
Language Film category at the 2018 Oscars.
